IN CAPE TOWN AT ARTSCAPE
13 – 28 OCTOBER 2018

Calling Us Home is a story of hope, a story of love and a story of home. The musical premiered on 17 August 2017 at the Joburg Theatre with an all-star cast of 33 and will be staged in October 2018 at Artscape in Cape Town.
A young woman, Grace, prepares to leave the country of her birth. Her safety is threatened by war and she is forced to flee, to abandon everything she loves for the uncertainties of a new urban jungle, where concrete structures block out the stars in the sky.

As she journeys across the savannah and the ocean to this new home, she meets others like her, with similar stories of survival, compassion and courage. They become her friends, her travelling companions, her family. Amongst them she finds a love ‘so strong that it tears the night sky apart’.
But light is never far from darkness and in the dark there is danger. Where will Grace find her true home? Follow her as she journeys to a country that doesn’t know her, under a sky that won’t ease her longing.

Calling A Star is an online-based competition aimed at identifying talented high school singers. It culminated in a gala event that took place on the 25th of August 2018 at Inner City Ideas Cartel Auditorium where 10 finalists performed in front of a prestigious panel of judges and an audience. The winners for #CallingAStar were Ché-jean Jupp (16) and Marzia Barry (17) who will both be joining the cast of Calling Us Home on stage during the Calling Us Home run in Cape Town.

The 10 selected finalists were invited to attend a workshop on the 11th of August at Artscape presented by the Africa Voices Trust, where some of the country’s most experienced performers and industry professionals worked with them, teaching them the basics of performing, making it in the industry, and much more.

This was our second #CallingAStar high schools event and we look forward to hosting similar competitions at every major centre where the Calling Us Home production opens its doors.

The learning doesn’t stop, as all finalists are invited to attend recording session in October and November. Calling Us Home is committed to creating as much positive growth in the entertainment industry as possible.

Calling All Voices is an online-based competition for young choirs and vocal groups based in the Western Cape that consist of a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 18 vocalists.

The winners of the #CallingAllVoices Competition were a vocal group from Noorder Paarl High School who won a recording session with a professional producer, at the world class recording studio, Milestone Studio. They were also invited to sing at the gala concert on the 25th of August 2018 at Inner City Ideas Cartel Auditorium with the 10 #CallingAStar finalists.

The competition included an Africa Voices Trust workshop consisting of a visit to Noorder Paarl High School to work with the winning group. It was a fun and informative event led by Anja van den Berg who conducted this passionate, completely self-taught and courageous group of young singers.
